Kirstyn Pearl
Recently, I had the pleasure to sit down with Kirstyn Pearl, founder of Seacoast Sweets, a company that makes delicious chocolate patties. How does someone get the idea to start a chocolate company? Learning more about Kirstyn answered this question for me. Her grandfather used to give boxes of homemade peppermint patties to family and friends as gifts around the holidays. More and more people wanted to taste these amazing chocolates and that’s when Kirstyn saw a business opportunity. She asked her grandfather what he thought about this idea and sure enough he agreed, passing down the prized recipe. In 2010, Seacoast Sweets began!

What drew me to Kirstyn was the fact that she is also a young woman entrepreneur. I began this interview by asking her “Are you brave?” She replied with “Yes, I am brave. Every woman is brave. We wake up every morning, put two feet on the ground, and give it our best in the world. How is that not brave?” I love that answer because it shows how powerful and determined she is. You must have those qualities if you want to become an entrepreneur.

While her current struggle is finding balance between working full time in the Financial District and operating Seacoast Sweets, the hardest thing Kirstyn has been through was continuously going against the norm. In high school, she was the only girl on the boy’s golf team, a time where she really had to step up and prove herself day in and day out. She realized that all the women she came across applauded what she was doing while the boys on the team were reserved and unsure of what to make of this strong female. It made her recognize that being different was a good thing, one that could give her a positive platform, and she fought even harder. Just recently, she went against the norm by coming out as gay, another difficult time for her. While she had a strong support system in her friends and family, knowing they would be accepting of any life she chose to live, she couldn’t help but think she would be letting them down. She lost herself in her work first, subconsciously making sure her foundation and reputation were strong in other places. It has become another thing she wears proudly, knowing that just like being the only girl on the golf team, these moments have all given her the thick skin and drive to be the successful woman she is today.

What is it that inspires this entrepreneur? She is inspired by strong women, hard workers and most recently, “Dream Big!”. Dream Big! is a non-profit organization that “works to empower girls from low-income situations by providing them with the basic items and fees needed to participate in sports and physical activities that contribute to their health, education, and over all well-being.” For every box of Seacoast Sweets sold, the company donates $1.00 to the organization.

I ended this interview by asking Kirstyn “Who do you want to empower?” She hopes to empower her younger siblings (ages 17, 10, and 8). Since Seacoast Sweets is a “family affair” and she is already setting a great example – showing them hard work, bravery and the importance of giving back. She also hopes to empower other women who are hesitant on making a leap for their dream. Although she is where she wants to be at this point in her life, every step along the way was met with hesitant feet. It was only through the powerful and strong women in her own life that she was able to have the confidence to believe in herself.

This is only the beginning for her and her rising company and here at Lindsay Tia we wish her nothing but successful!
